I chose TKS Tilers to tile the whole of my ground floor after an initial reasonable quotation. The work was booked to be carried out within 4 weeks of the quote being provided. I advised Tom that I would need to take annual leave in order to be home whilst the work was carried out. I also kept him up to date on the order of the tiles and ETA.
A week before the work was to commence, Tom got in touch to say that he needed to delay for 2 weeks for various reasons. I explained that I had already booked my leave and I had also booked to have my carpet refitted on the first floor straight after his job. Despite the above, I still compromised and was happy to agree to a 1 week delay. Tom arrived on the first morning of the job and after half an hour advised that he had serious tooth ache and could not continue working. Again, I sympathised and agreed that he should take the day to sort himself out. Furthermore, I made it very clear again that I had taken annual leave and couldn’t cancel it so needed the job completing within the week. I also reiterated that I had my carpet booked into be fitted after his job which, if cancelled, would incur a charge.
2 hours after Tom left I received a text message from him cancelling the job because he was ill. I received no apology or alternative solution. I am now left having to cancel my carpet fitting, incurring a penalty charge in the process and a weeks wasted annual leave because am struggling to find anyone to take my job on such short notice!
Maybe the alarm bells should have started ringing when Tom initially made an excuse to delay the job. He clearly had no intentions of carrying out the work!
