Liars and Cheats.
Now i dont use them words lightly, so let me explain.
I live locally to them in wimbledon and they have been there for donkeys years
Proper hands on mechanics that would do a good job or so i thought.
My peugeot 306`s engine was knocking and getting hot too.
So i took it to them with suspected head gasket faliure, given price of 350 and they would also investigate knocking too.
so they strips engine down and says oh the pistons are all loose thats more money .
I went and viewed the car and the engine was stripped right down i could see thru to the floor.
so now i`m told the 350 quoted didnt include parts or VAT(Main Dealer only quoted 450 all in) plus the extra damage to the pistons, now im told 900 plus vat. i said the car aint worth spending more then a grand on(car value was 1500) so they said they would do it for a grand all in. Fine, we shook on it.
I popped in the next week and they were putting it all back together, but sommat didnt look right, i was in a hurry and wasnt sure so left them to it.
At the end of the week they caled me to collect it but on inspection i could see that it wasnt the same engine, The mechanic insisted it was, but i said No Way... The engine in there now was a slightly different design and that had cut and shut the exhaust to make it fit the manifold, meaning it had no CAT no more. It had old style Oil Filter system and the oil stick was at the other end to where it used to be...
In short they had shoved in a second hand engine off Ebay and wanted to charge me a grand for it !
When the boss turns up he trys to say he didnt know it had been fitted but try it anyway, so i gives it a run out, but where the Exhaust had been butchered it clashed with the gearstick so it wouldnt go in Gear 2 or 4 and it had white smoke coming out the back too.
I says No, i aint accepting that rubbish, you get my engine back in there and all the work done as agreed, in hindsight i wish i had called trading standards there and then.
Anyway a week later the work was done, i had been in there earlier that week to check the engine as it was going back in to make sure it had the right engine number, and as it happened it ran very well for several more years afterwards.
But i`m sure they would have taken my money without telling they had done a cut and shut on my exhaust, the car had no Cat Convertor and the wrong engine number on my paperwork, not to mention not being able to put it in some of the gears :(
